We are very excited to announce a new beautiful wooden owl sculpture at Welland Cemetery.
Works are underway at Welland Cemtery for biodiversity and cultural enhancement. We have recently had to cut down 5 overgrown leylandii trees at the cemetery due to concerns of encroachment on neighbouring properties. We are leaving the stumps as an important insect habitat and are going to replace the trees with a new native bird-friendly hedgerow, the planting of which has already begun. Many thanks to Worcestershire County Council (Natural Networks) for the grant funding for this biodiversity project.
We have left two of the trunks slightly taller, so that they can be converted into beautiful wooden sculptures. As well as the gorgeous owl sculpture pictured above, there is also going to be a bench for peaceful reflection. Many thanks to Malvern Hills National Landscape and David Armitage for the grant funding to create these sculptures as part of our community engagement and cultural enhancement project, and also to Ant Beetlestone, genius sculptor.
The wood from the leylandii will be repurposed into environmental habitats (e.g. logpiles) and benches over the coming months. There is also a pile of wood chippings on the Spitalfields Carpark which is free to any residents who would like them for their gardens; they are perfect for mulching!
