The Marlbank vineyard just off the Marlbank Road in Welland, could well be the area’s best kept secret. Owned and run by Jeremy Macklin, who first planted 1,540 pinot noir vines in 2021, the vineyard’s first Blanc de Noir vintage, an award-winning sparkling wine, is now on sale just in time for Christmas. This sparkling wine is a perfect pairing to go with Christmas nibbles, especially smoked salmon or saucisson. You can purchase the wine online or by appointment, or indeed purchase a voucher as a gift which can be used to buy wine or to reserve a place on a vineyard tour and tasting after next spring.

“Marlbank has an extensive history of fruit growing. Apples and pears, producing renowned cider and perry have long been grown here,” said Jeremy. “Today it gives me much joy to bring a new twist to this Marlbank tradition by growing the Pinot Noir vines in a one acre hand cultivated vineyard. The marl soils have been washed down from the Malvern Hills for millennia, giving us a soil similar to some of the best vineyards in Burgundy.”

“ We have just released a second batch of the 2023 vintage, which won a Gold Medal in the London tasting awards earlier this year. Many regular dog-walkers will be familiar now with the idea of grapes growing in Welland, but folks may not know that there is a group of growers called the Malvern Hills Vineyards who have recently got together to promote their medal-winning wines.
