Welland Community Cinema – Lion

Based on a true story, Lion follows Saroo, a five-year-old boy from a poor Indian family who becomes lost after boarding the wrong train, ending up thousands of miles from home in Kolkata. Unable to communicate where he’s from, Saroo struggles to survive on the streets before being placed in an orphanage and adopted by an Australian couple, Sue and John Brierley. Growing up in Tasmania, Saroo adapts to his new life but remains haunted by memories of his birth family. As an adult, he embarks on a quest to find his home using Google Earth, piecing together fragmented memories of his childhood. His search strains his relationships, but his determination ultimately leads him back to his mother in India, decades after they were separated. Lion is a powerful, emotional journey about identity, family, and the enduring pull of home, featuring standout performances by Dev Patel and Sunny Pawar.
